THE NEW EDUCATION CENTER. WHY IS IT NEEDED?
At Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, we believe that by investing in the education of our staff, physicians and local residents and giving them the tools they need to make optimum healthcare and medical decisions, we all benefit.
The new Education Center at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital will inform and empower patients, families, community members and hospital staff by providing accurate health information and connecting them to appropriate hospital and community services and programs.
Designed as a 10,280 square-foot state-of-the art facility, Henry Mayo’ s new Education Center will provide the environment, resources, technology, staff and curricula to deliver coordinated education programs to patients and families, nursing staff, employees, volunteers, physicians, and members of Santa Clarita Valley community.
WHEN WILL IT BE BUILT?
Completed in 2014, the new Education Center is located on the first floor of the Henry Mayo Center facing McBean Parkway and adjacent to the parking structure. It will include one 116-seat conference room divisible into two 48-seat rooms, two 40-seat conference rooms, one 28-seat IT training classroom, and a simulation suite for nurse education.
WHO WILL IT SERVE?
To patients and families, the Education Center will provide a variety of classes and consultations, including pre-surgery education and pain management education.
To members of the community, the Center will provide an array of education services ranging from disease prevention education classes, health fairs and screening events to seminars and support groups, which benefit local residents of all ages. The Center will become a home to classes and support groups (such as Labor of Love, etc), currently meeting in various rooms across campus.
To members of Henry Mayo’s highly trained and experienced medical staff, the Education Center will provide regular continuing medical education programs that are scientifically supported, relevant to their practices, and current in topic.
To the hospital clinical and non-clinical staff, the Center will provide nationally recognized leadership training, regular and practical hands-on training for new medical technologies, critical thinking, and training for basic software applications. Continuing staff education, in-service education, new employee and volunteer orientations, leadership development training and other classes will be held at the Education Center.
WHAT EDUCATION TECHNOLOGIES WILL IT HAVE?
The Education Center will incorporate the most current technology including a simulation suite that will provide nursing staff with case scenarios related to their practice and patient demographics. Through the use of didactic presentations, computer based learning and high-fidelity human patient simulators (manikins that talk, breath, have heart sounds, blood pressures, etc.), participants would be provided with education that meets adult learning needs in a non-threatening, controlled environment. Additionally, the participants would be afforded the opportunity to implement best nursing practices, enhance critical thinking skills, and practice the aforementioned in an environment that does not place a patient at risk.
The implementation of a high technology Education Center and simulation suite will enable Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital to provide a patient-centric environment with a focus on safety and quality care. Development of a simulation suite within the Education Center will allow for staff to move from novice to practitioner in an environment that is conducive to adult learning needs while maintaining the safety of patients during the training period.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
The cost associated with building the New Education Center is roughly $2,300,000. In addition, anticipated $1,600,000 will be needed needed for equipment and technology in the Simulation Lab.
