Foundation Welcomes Guenther to Board

291 The Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation is proud to welcome David Guenther, local business owner and official scorer of the Lancaster Jet Hawks, as a new member of its Board of Directors.

Born and raised in nearby Lancaster, David Guenther owns J. David’s Custom Clothiers, now in its 29thyear and located in the Patios at Westfield Valencia Town Center.

A long-time supporter of the Henry Mayo’s Guild Fashion Show, when approached about joining the Foundation’s Board, Guenther did not hesitate to accept; he knew immediately that he wanted to be associated with a group of individuals who have chosen to support health care.

Through his personal experiences with medical organizations, he has grown to appreciate the importance of great medical care close to home. About three years ago, at age 43, Guenther suffered a brain aneurysm. Despite being told he had a 2% chance of survival, he underwent 32 hours of brain surgery and lived.

“I was blessed to have survived,” Guenther said. “It was a life-changing experience that made me realize that immediate access to medical care is often the difference between life and death. Henry Mayo is the place this community will go to for health care, especially for emergency services, and for that reason, it is critical that the hospital has the very best in medical services.

“Lives are saved at Henry Mayo and I’d like to think that the Foundation’s efforts to raise funds for life-saving technology and services have helped in a significant way,” he added. “That’s what it’s all about and why I am happy to be part of what this Board has been able to accomplish.”

Guenther, who joined the Board in August and knows most of its members, is ready and willing to do whatever is asked of him. Of special personal interest, he said, are neurosurgery and new equipment and technology.

“Though I am new, I have such an absolute confidence in every person on the board,” he said. “These are great people and they get things done.”

When he isn’t at his store, participating on Board projects, or with his wife, Denise, and their two children, Krysta, 23, and Ricky, 21, Guenther spends his time with baseball--his passion. Guenther, a certified baseball official scorerat the major league level, has been the official scorer of the Lancaster Jet Hawks for the last 16 years. He has also been inducted into their Hall of Fame.

Prior to his brain aneurism, Guenther had been a scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates for seven years. He currently serves as a scout for the Cincinnati Reds. The passion for sports carries into his business which also caters to many professional athletes who have autographed memorabilia items displayed throughout his store.
